Healing with
Regenerative Medicine
What is regenerative medicine?
Regenerative medicine is the application of treatments developed to replace tissues damaged by age, injury, or disease.
The Stellar Difference
We use a unique “leukocyte poor” PRP formulation. This allows for more anti-inflammatory properties that may be hindered with higher leukocyte PRP injections.
Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP)
What is Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP)?
A component of blood that has a high concentration of platelets. Platelets are a component of blood whose function is to react to bleeding by creating a blood clot. Platelets also contain cytokines and growth factors which promote wound healing and regeneration of damaged tissues.
Where do you get PRP from?
PRP is also known as autologous conditioned plasma obtained directly from you. A small amount of blood is drawn from you and then placed in a centrifuge until the platelet rich portion is separated.
How does PRP work for pain management?
PRP injection into painful region such as your hip, shoulder and knee and other areas such as your spine works by decreasing inflammation and promoting healing. Your body responds to injury by releasing platelets, growth factors and cytokines but the concentration of this can be low. PRP injection augments the process through high concentration injection.
What is the evidence for PRP in pain management?
For knee injections PRP was found to be superior to than other injectables such as steroid, gel based solutions, and placebo from a META analysis trial especially at 6 months and 12 months (PRP Injections for the Treatment of Knee Osteoarthritis: A Meta-Analysis of Randomized Controlled Trials 2020).
Regenerative Medical Treatment
What conditions do we treat with Regenerative Medicine?
We treat a range of pain from osteoarthritis of the knee, hip, shoulder, and spine including facet injections and sacroiliac joint injections. This is a great alternative to those who wish to avoid steroid (“cortisone”) based injections.
Are there any risks with this procedure?
There are risks to any procedure. The risks for PRP are very low (less than 1%) and attributed mostly to needle placement (infection, bleeding, tissue damage). The chance of reaction to the injectate is low since it is your own blood.
What is expected before the PRP treatment?
The team at Stellar Pain and Spine will complete a detailed history and physical examination and discuss treatment options for your painful condition. PRP treatment will be scheduled if deemed appropriate.
What is expected during the procedure?
A trained staff member will draw your blood from a vein in a sterile fashion. The blood will be placed in a centrifuge and PRP will be isolated. The PRP will then be injected into the targeted region by a trained specialist with image guidance to ensure accuracy. The process typically takes 30 minutes.
What is expected after the procedure?
There may be some soreness post injection that will improve with time. Some patients may require more than one treatment to maximize efficacy.
